First statistical center in Ilocos Norte to open at NWU
Northwestern University will open its own statistical center catering to students in the undergraduate and graduate courses.
The center will support students in the proper planning and data collection of their research work since statistical support can make projects/researches more effective by appropriate study design and analysis raising the quantity and relevance of information gained from the research.
NWU adds top-caliber maritime professors
Northwestern University has hired three professors with the ranks of captain, the highest maritime official post, to join the faculty and teach professional subjects in the College of Maritime Education (COME).
Capt. Jesus Cabrera, Capt. Winnie Bandong, and Capt. Bienvenido Cabacungan, are all lecturers and professors of the SeaTech Training Center in Manila and graduates from the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA). Captains Bandong and Cababungan both teach International Safety Management and Cargo Handling and Storage, in a modular approach.
NWU Initiates '10 Strategic Planning Session
The Corporate Planning Office and Quality Assurance Center in cooperation with the Office of the President and SVPAA Office conducted the Strategic Planning Session 2010 with the theme, Embarking on a Corporate Excellence Journey through Commitment to a Strong Quality Foundation. This annual event was held last April 23, 2010 at the Fort Ilocandia Resort Hotel. CorPlan Director Dr. Eric Parilla pointed out that the strategic planning session was aimed to come-up with macro and micro plans for the entire University for the School Year 2010-2011. He added that the event helped school officials in advancing their respective tasks for the upcoming school year.
The presenters gave details about suggestions on quality improvements for the administration, accomplishments and accreditation status of the university. Parilla also added that procedure on the preparation of the budget for each department was discussed and they projected the number of enrollees per college as basis for budget preparation. They also charted the evaluation of the planned courses of action of each department.
The planning session was exclusively attended by vice presidents, college deans, directors, department heads, and internal auditors.
NWU Hosts Frontliners Seminar-Workshop

With the aim to better boost customer satisfaction, the CorPlan and HRD Offices in cooperation with Smart Telecom, Inc. conducted frontliner's seminar-workshop dubbed as "Hello! This is NWU at Your Service" on May 17 and 18 at the NWU Eco-Tourism Park and Botanic Garden. University frontliners in the seminar-workshop comprised clerks, record evaluators, tellers and library personnel.
Dr. Eric Parilla, CorPlan Director, said that the purpose of the seminar-workshop was to develop customer service consciousness, proper work attitude, behavior and work ethics. He further stated that the seminar will enhance skills and techniques in handling the needs and demands of customers. Parilla added that the seminar-workshop was a way of continuous improvement of customer service, and will equip frontliners with basic communication skills to interact and communicate to customers.
Ilocano SC Magistrate speaks at the 78th Commencement Exercises
A former college of law professor addressed 1,017 graduates during the Northwestern University's 78th Commencement Exercises on April 9, 2010. Supreme Court Associate Justice Diosdado M. Peralta was chosen by the university’s board as this year's speaker for his outstanding performance and exemplary record in public service and legal education.
In his speech, Peralta said that although he had no opportunity to tread the halls of the university as a student, he had a brief teaching stint in the College of Law in 1987 when he was a young fiscal of Laoag City.
The university conferred upon Associate Justice Peralta the degree of Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa, in recognition of his invaluable contribution in the enrichment of the legal profession as a highly esteemed legal luminary, professor and lecturer of law courses and bar reviewer in different universities of the Philippines and abroad. In the citation, the University recognized Peralta for his sincere and relentless efforts to fight against graft and corruption in the government that made him the first judge to have penned a plunder conviction in the country. He was also instrumental in initiating legal and judicial changes and reforms especially on criminal law.
Legacy: A History with a Human Face
"An incredible story of survival," she spoke before alumni, school officials and guests. After 10 months of writing and 2 1/2 years of conducting intensive research and editing, Mrs. Erlinda Gloria's first book titled "Legacy" was launched as a gift for Northwestern University on March 6 at the University Worship Center.
In an interview, Mrs. Gloria who spent all her professional life in the university said that this beautiful story was written for the younger generations. She added that "the story is inspiring because if you've been a part of Northwestern, you cannot help but be encouraged by its humble beginnings, how it struggled hard to be what it is today and how these good men and women were able to translate their dreams into reality."
