NWU joins Earth Hour
With the aim to raise awareness regarding the need to take action on climate change, Northwestern University joined Ilocos Norte Provincial Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Energy and local communities to participate in Earth Hour last March 27 at the 365 Plaza San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte.
Earth Hour is a global event established by World Wildlife Fund and held annually on the last Saturday of March. All households and businesses are asked to turn off their non-essential lights and other electric appliances for one hour (8:30-9:30 p.m.) to raise awareness on climate change.
Former NWU Legal Assistant, Three Others Pass Bar Exams
Northwestern University produced four new lawyers after its graduates successfully passed the bar examination given September 2009 in Manila.
The new lawyers are Joel P. Dadis, Bernadette B. Espejo, Kalvin Henson S. Pascual, and Wellah R. Singson. Dadis was the former university legal assistant.
The new lawyers are among the 1,451 successful examinees who passed from the 5,903 who took the exams. Unlike the traditional bar exam set-up where one examiner is designated to each of the eight subjects, the 2009 bar exam was the first time where two examiners were assigned to prepare the questions. This made the examination into two parts.
Sikat Solar Powered Car Warms NWU
Not even the heat of the sun prevented spectators from taking a glimpse of a space craft-like solar car in motion at the University Oval.
Sikat (which means sunrise in English), the country's second solar car, headed through the Laoag City proper and made a historical stop at the Northwestern University last February 23 as the 2 month road-show drew to a close. Its visit aimed to promote the use of renewable energy and to prepare the team for the 2011 World Solar Challenge.
Sikat was designed as a single-seater race car with three wheels and is powered by solar radiation. Sikat is expected to run at about 80 kph. If battery charge is utilized, the car can run up to 110 kph. The car can travel for 400 km. running from battery power alone.
Dr. Lori Marseli de Castro, SVPAA, and De La Salle University-Manila (DLSU) Electrical and Communications Engr. Jack Catalan, Sikat Assistant Project Leader, officially opened the exhibition, by announcing NWU as one of the partners of Sikat in the 2011 World Solar Challenge. Students, employees, university officials and other secondary institutions of Ilocos Norte had a chance to interview the Philippine Solar Car Challenge Society (PSCS) representatives and DLSU Team and take a glimpse of the ingenious car displayed at the Student Center.
NWU Holds Job Fair on Campus
To help graduating students find suitable jobs, the NWU-PESO and Guidance Center Office in cooperation with the Office of the Students Affairs and Alumni Affairs conducted a Job Fair at the Student Center last February 19.
Guidance Center Director Rilan Grace Reyes said the primary goal of the job fair was to assist graduating students in finding a job.
NWU-PESO Acting Head Charito F. Marcos added that this activity is an employment strategy which brings both the employers and jobseekers to one venue for immediate matching. During the opening program, DOLE-INPLO Field Office Head Engr. Leonardo Catapia and Labor and Employment Officer Ms. Floria Garcia discussed about wage and its related benefits to the graduating students and other guests. A film entitled "Bagong Bayani" written and shot by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration to address the rampant illegal recruitment issues was also viewed by the attendees.
NWU helps 4th Year High School Students in Career Planning
The Guidance Center and NWU-PESO in cooperation with the High School Department conducted a Career Day Program last February 25 and 26 to assist the NWU-LHS 4th year high school students in making career plans.
The two-day program started with the career planning seminar at the Old Media Hall. Deans of different colleges were invited to talk about their course offerings with the hopes of directing and guiding the students in making the right career choices. Topics discussed were Knowing Myself; My Career Options; and Decision Making Processes.
PDEA signs MOA with NWU, Lectures Students on Drug Awareness
With the aim of informing the students on the ill effects of drug use, the Corporate Planning Office through the Marketing Department invited Assistant Secretary Rodolfo Caisip of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) to conduct a Drug Awareness Lecture last February 25 at the New Media Hall.
Prior to the program, PDEA and NWU signed a Memorandum of Agreement for the on-the-job training of students with courses related to the agency's function. The two organizations also agreed that they join hands in the mobilization of the anti-drug abuse prevention education and information dissemination program.
