CTE student is Supreme Student Council head
Northwestern University conducted an online, off-campus election for the Supreme Student Council for the Academic Year 2020-2021 on October 23, 2020. The election committee (EleCom)—headed by chairman Mr. Ancher Cua, and with members Ms. Zsa Zsa Torres, Mr. Christopher Viloria, Ms. Michelle Domingo and Mr. Ronald Andres—announced the opening of the SSC Election 2020 on the NWU Facebook page last October 8. The filing of the certificate of candidacy (COC) would be via Google forms.
Of the thousands of students qualified to run for the position, Meynard Castro was the only one who took on the challenge and finalized his party to be evaluated and completed for the set of aspiring officers this academic year. They were also invited to showcase their communication abilities through U-radio 107.5 via an online broadcast, with their persuading talks and ideas focusing on practicing rights and discipline in the university.
After assessing difficulties in network connections and student-voters’ situations, the NWU EleCom staff came up with a three-step online voting process with the submission of the online ballot through the NWU webpage.
With all the efforts given despite the challenges that were beyond the control of the EleCom, CICT and BEIs, a total of six hundred and ten (610) or fifteen point eleven percent (15.11%) of the students were able to cast their votes during the election period.
Considering the number of votes cast in this election and previous elections with only one party, the EleCom officially proclaimed the winners.
“We kept on receiving sudden messages from our schoolmates about the difficulties [of the online election process] but still, the EleCom of our university did their very best to conduct an online election. Anyway, we need to embrace the challenge in this new normal setup. All praises to the CICT, especially the Director Sir Ching, also the Elecom. We survived the challenge of the new normal,” said Mr. Castro, the newly elected SSC President of SY 2020-2021.
Students expect the new set of officers to fulfill their duties and responsibilities excellently even amidst the pandemic, and to come up with more student-friendly projects for the better academic performance of students.
