Outstanding Award given to NWU acting Dean of Student Affairs
AFS Intercultural Programs Philippines (AFS IPP) awarded Northwestern University acting Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Agustina Dancel-Matias, the Outstanding Volunteer Award last December 5, 2020.
The AFS IPP helps people of all ages and backgrounds develop leadership, problem-solving, language, and intercultural skills needed to succeed in a global economy and make a positive difference in the world. AFS local volunteers are the driving force of AFS programs and are active at all levels—supporting students and families through their AFS intercultural journeys, participating in governance and policy development, and leading social impact projects with local schools and communities.
Prof. Matias, as dean of the Office of Student Affairs, manages to help and to mold future student leaders, global citizens, and change-makers. She also encourages them to effectively collaborate, engage, and lead in different cultural settings.
“Perhaps I would rather share what my grandparents (Mr. and Mrs. Julian and Sabina Dancel, Retired School Administrators in Dingras and World War II Veterans)[said], ‘Try and do your best, how you can be of service to others.’ They often tell me to help others whenever and in whatever way I can…and I am so blessed that having that as my life’s mantra had made me feel immeasurable joy beyond the value of money and I have also earned the respect from others. This is also my way of returning their blessings I have received all throughout my life’s journey and up till now,” said Prof. Matias.
