Northwestern University hauls victories in Intayon Awards 2020
Northwestern University students won awards in the Search for Ilocos Norte Ten Accomplished Youth and Organizations (INTAYON) last January 22, 2021. Headed by the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte through the Ilocos Norte Youth Development Office (Sirib Express), the INTAYON Awards recognizes students and groups of students who dedicate themselves to grooming the province and other youth, help build opportunities, and create programs and advocacies for future generations.
The Sirib Express—the flagship youth program of the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte—is the largest volunteer youth group in Ilocos Norte that aims to increase youth involvement in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the PGIN programs, projects and activities, and local legislation.
Mr. Jc Finale Siazon, a Juris Doctor 1 from the College of Law, nabbed the first place during the individual category of the INTAYON Awards 2020. Mr. Siazon’s implementation titled “Organic Gulayan sa Barangay, MRF, Vemi and Compost Pit” promotes integrated urban gardening focused on organic farming with environmental protection. He also received an award from the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA) as an outstanding volunteer in the Ilocos region.
Mr. Siazon says that this might serve as hope in these trying times. According to him, the plan he leads not only benefited his fellow kabarangayans but also aims to enlighten all aspiring leaders to create a change in their own barangays. For him, organic farming creates more jobs, creates better food diversity, and yields such vital benefits as preservation of the soil’s organic composition.
The SSC project “Serve, Share, Care” grabbed the first place for the group category for tertiary level. This project promotes leadership abilities and volunteerism, selflessly handling outreach programs outside campus and encouraging students to have their spirit of leadership for the community.
The website and student publication digitization project of The Review, NWU’s student publication, nabbed the second place for the group category for the tertiary level. This project aims to reach more students through the digitization of student publications and considers community by providing timely and relevant issues and articles.
These awards only affirm that Northwesternians continue to overcome challenges and uphold excellence amidst the pandemic.
