The Saguday Performing Arts Conducts Virtual Cultural Show
NWU’s Saguday Performing Arts showcased an online cultural show with the title, “Biag Ni Ilokano: Panangtaliaw iti Napalabas” on February 12, 2021.
The cultural show was part of the 89th Foundation Anniversary of the university. Made possible by the Cultural Affairs Office, under the Office of Student Affairs, it also paved the way for a partnership with the National Commision for Culture and Arts. The Saguday Chorale and Dance Troupe displayed their talents in supporting cultural dances and songs, and to inspire the Ilocano Youth to promote our Ilokano Cultures. Mr. Jonathan A. Paguirigan is the Acting Cultural Affairs Coordinator and co-director of the show.
The Saguday Chorale performed an audiovisual presentation for the Doxology, Philippine National Anthem, Asean Hymn, and the NWU Hymn.
The program started with an overview of the Rural Suite, or “Sayaw sa Kanayunan,” namely “Binatbatan,” “Rabong,” and “Kalapati,” while the Saguday Dance Troupe performed the different dances in between introductions.
The Saguday Chorale, on the other hand, performed duets of Ilocano folk songs. These songs were the famous “O Naraniag a Bulan” and “No Duduaem Pay.”
Another set of dances presented the Maria Clara Suite, namely the “Ilocano a Nasudi” and “Surtido Banna,” performed gracefully by the Saguday Dance Troupe.
Meanwhile, the Medley of Ilocano Folk Songs, which includes three Ilocano, waltz-beat folk songs—“Dagiti Bituen idiay langit,” “Diay Baybay,” and Imnas ni Ayat”—and a song called “Bannatiran” were performed yet again by the Saguday Chorale.
“Marahil po lahat tayo ay may pinagdadaanang paghihirap sa paglaganap ng pandemya sa ating nayon. Gayun pa man, hindi dapat tayo tumigil sa ating mga gawaing nagbibigay ng buhay at tuwa sa ating mga damdamin bilang mga Ilokano at Pilipino,” University President Atty. Ferdinand S. Nicolas said in his message.
Miss Shirley Halili- Cruz, the Chairperson of National Committee on Dance and Executive Director of Dance Xchange, gave her message, stressing, “The commitment of the group to promote arts and culture, while improving their skills through exposures in the different national and international programs is really commendable.”
Mr. Jonathan A. Paguirigan, the Acting Cultural Affairs Coordinator, gave his words of gratitude to the people who made the virtual show possible. “Nawa’y ito na po ang simula ng partnership ng NWU at NCCA,” he said.
Saguday Dance Troupe and Saguday Chorale ended the show by jointly performing the Pamulinawen song and dance.
