Northwestern University joins “Find the One in Region 1” Birdwatching Tour Circuit
Northwestern University, together with the Department of Tourism Region 1, the Province of Ilocos Norte, the LGUs of Laoag City, Paoay, Pasuquin, Burgos, Pagudpud, and Adams, the Department of Natural Resources, launched “Find the One in Region 1” Birdwatching Tour Circuit, held in Paoay Lake Natural Park, Paoay, Ilocos Norte on December 17, 2021. The agencies were joined by birding consultants and selected stakeholders.
Mr. Michael Calaramo, Bird Experts Acting Director of Ecosystem Management and Development Office Ecotourism Park and Botanic Garden, and Mr. Nick Icarangal of Birding Adventures Philippines conducted a series of field validations, inventory, and mapping activities in the various sites in Ilocos Norte. These sites are known to host both rare migratory and endemic bird species and exceptionally rich biodiversity, and are frequented by local and international raptor watchers and birders before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Several bird species were sighted and noted by the DOT validation team.
The province of Ilocos Norte is on the top of the list for birding areas, as the northern tip of the province is declared “Important Bird Area” (IBA) by Birdlife International, home to numerous endemic avifauna, including the Rufous Hornbills and raptor species.
The newly developed roadmap promises safer eco-tourism in Ilocos Norte. This unique ecological tourism activity in the province will surely entice both local and foreign visitors, as well as be an eye-opener for the conservation of our natural heritage.
