Five international exchange students from the AFS-IPP (American Field Service Intercultural Program Philippines) are joining NWU for the Academic Year 2021-2022. They are: Johanna Kneuper from Germany, Yoshino Yasui from Japan, Mike Kluck from Germany, Irma De Broe from Belgium Flanders, and Aurora Cantini from Italy.
They are in a 10-month cultural immersion agenda under the AFS-IPP program, and while studying at NWU, are considered full-time scholars for two semesters. Four of them joined various tracks in senior high: Johanna and Yoshino in the HUMSS track, Aurora in Tech Voc, Mike in STEM. Meanwhile, Irma enrolled in BA Communication.
NWU is one out of five schools in the Philippines entrusted with a Youth Exchange Scholarship (YES) of the United States.
As one of the participating universities of the AFS-IPP program, it includes institutional relevance in global citizenship education, and provides intercultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world. Through international exchange programs, AFS-IPP aims to support global citizenship education.
The AFS-IPP program was first introduced during the 1970s with a few participants from Ilocos National High School (INNHS) and was revived two years ago in Ilocos Norte.
NWU already had previous batches of AFS international exchange students during the Academic Years 2017-2018 and 2018-2019.
