NWU hosts English Camps for Japanese students from Keiai University
A young Japanese in a blue T-shirt stands in front of a class of elementary students. With a slide presentation flashed behind him, he engages them in discussion. As he asks questions, some of the children readily raise their hands to recite. The students are Filipinos.
The young man handling the class is one of the participants in Northwestern University’s English Camp. Held last February 14 to 27, 2018, the English Camp is the second to be hosted by NWU for the students of Keiai University, a private university in the city of Inage-ku, Chiba, Chiba Prefecture, Japan.
This session of practice teaching was one of the activities of the camp. Other activities included lectures, educational tours around the province, speaking in U-Radio (NWU’s radio station), a visit to Riverdeep Academy and Museo de Bacarra, and an exchange of Japanese and Filipino cultures.
The first batch of English Campers joined the program in early September 2017. A total of thirteen attended the camp, who were all housed in the Northwestern University Hotel. As with the second batch, Mr Shigeru Koda accompanied them. He was the one who proposed a tie-up with NWU for the camp.
Prof Maricon Guillermo, the Program Director of the English Camp, along with Mr. Marshall Josue of the Language and Literacy Center, faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Teacher Education and personnel from the Office of the President, ensured that the guests received, not only the English training they were after, but memorable experiences to contribute to the building of their dreams as future educators.
